Bearing Witness at Work

Welcome / Call to Worship
Song – “Goodness of God”

Verse 1
I love You Lord
Oh Your mercy never fails me
All my days
I’ve been held in Your hands
From the moment that I wake up
Until I lay my head
I will sing of the goodness of God

Chorus
All my life You have been faithful
All my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
I will sing of the goodness of God

Verse 2
I love Your voice
You have led me through the fire
In darkest nights
You are close like no other
I’ve known You as a father
I’ve known You as a friend
I have lived in the goodness of God

Chorus

Bridge x2
Your goodness is running after, it’s running after me
Your goodness is running after, it’s running after me
With my life laid down, I’m surrendered now, I give You everything
Your goodness is running after, it’s running after me

Chorus x2

Message – “Bearing Witness at Work”

Scripture: Matthew 5:14-16, 2 Cor 5:17-20, 1 Pet 3:13-15
Speaker: Pastor Joshua Scheid
Series: Work as Worship

Sometimes we worship our work, and it leads to stress, bitterness, and burnout. What if we see our work as an act of worship? There is a Redeemer, who rescues our rhythms of work and rest, significance and purpose.

Bearing witness at work is an important part of gospel-centered discipleship.

witness : to share your faith
in God’s saving grace through Jesus Christ
with someone else

A. Observation #1:
Our [distinctive presence] as Christians in the world.

Through history, Christians have confronted two opposite temptations:

  1. to be [conformed] to the world
    Romans 12:2

  2. to [withdraw] from the world
    John 17:14-19

    People know you’re a Christian – or don’t they?

B. Observation #2:
Our witness is incomplete [without words] .

C. Four points of application:

  1. do your [work] well

  2. put [work] on the table

  3. build [work] at work that extend beyond work

  4. use the witness of your [work]

Song – “A Mighty Fortress”

Verse 1
A mighty fortress is our God,
a bulwark never failing;
our helper He amid the flood
of mortal ills prevailing.
For still our ancient foe
does seek to work us woe;
his craft and power are great,
and armed with cruel hate,
on earth is not his equal.

Verse 2
Did we in our own strength confide,
our striving would be losing,
were not the right Man on our side,
the Man of God’s own choosing.
You ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth his name,
from age to age the same;
and He must win the battle.

Verse 3
And though this world, with devils filled,
should threaten to undo us,
we will not fear, for God has willed
His truth to triumph through us.
The prince of darkness grim,
we tremble not for him;
his rage we can endure,
for lo! his doom is sure;
one little word shall fell him.

Verse 4
That Word above all earthly powers
no thanks to them abideth;
the Spirit and the gifts are ours
through Him who with us sideth.
Let goods and kindred go,
this mortal life also;
the body they may kill:
God’s truth abideth still;
His kingdom is forever!
