Message – “The Challenge of Worldliness”

Scripture: James 4:1-10 & 1 John 2:15-17
Speaker: Pastor Joshua Scheid
Series: Pressing On

Are you keeping in step with the Spirit or keeping in step with the world?

“Every single congregation in America must ask itself if it has compromised so much with the world that it has been compromised in its faithfulness.” — Rod Dreher in The Benedict Option (Sentinel, 2017)

WHAT IS IT?

A. worldliness : [being ruled by passion for something other than God]

B. Forms of worldliness in 1 John 2:15-16

  1. desire for things we don’t have, but come to [crave]
  2. love for what we do have — [pride] of possession

WHY IS IT SUCH A CHALLENGE?

Underneath all our living in the world—our choices, our pursuits, our financial transactions, how we spend our time—underneath all of that is the deep [longing] of our heart for [significance] and [security].

HOW DO WE RESIST IT?

A. [Common sense] (1 John 2:17)

B. [Displace] it with something better

Loving and being loved by God
is unspeakably better
than being loved by the world
  1. James 4:8 : “draw near to God and He will draw near to you”
  2. James 4:6 : “He gives more [grace]!”
Whom have I in heaven but you?
And having you I desire nothing on earth.
Yes my heart and my flesh may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart
and my portion forever. As for me,
the nearness of God is my good.
                                  — Psalm 73: 25, 26, 28

Sacrament – The Lord’s Supper
×As the family meal of Christians, the Lord’s Supper is a gift of grace. If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart God raised him from the dead, you are invited to partake of this meal.

One: The Lord be with you.
All: And also with you.
Lift up your hearts! We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
With joy we give our thanks and praise!

With joy we praise you, gracious Father…
…we proclaim the glory of Your name:

Holy, holy, holy, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is He
who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest!

Father, You sent Your Son to show us Your glory…
…we proclaim the hope of our faith:

Christ has died!
Christ is risen!
Christ will come again!

Send Your Holy Spirit upon us, we pray…
Even so, come Lord Jesus!

This is my body broken for you.
This is my blood poured out for you.
Do this in remembrance of me.
The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven:
hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come, Your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Yours is the kingdom, the power,
and the glory forever. Amen.

Song – “Yet Not I But Through Christ In Me”

Verse 1
What gift of grace is Jesus my Redeemer
There is no more for heaven now to give
He is my joy, my righteousness, and freedom
My steadfast love, my deep and boundless peace

To this I hold: my hope is only Jesus
For my life is wholly bound to His
Oh how strange and divine, I can sing: all is mine
Yet not I, but through Christ in me

Verse 2
The night is dark but I am not forsaken
For by my side, the Savior He will stay
I labor on in weakness and rejoicing
For in my need, His power is displayed

To this I hold: my Shepherd will defend me
Through the deepest valley He will lead
Oh the night has been won, and I shall overcome
Yet not I, but through Christ in me

Verse 3
No fate I dread, I know I am forgiven
The future sure, the price it has been paid
For Jesus bled and suffered for my pardon
And he was raised to overthrow the grave

To this I hold: my sin has been defeated
Jesus now and ever is my plea
Oh the chains are released, I can sing: I am free
Yet not I, but through Christ in me

Verse 4
With every breath I long to follow Jesus
For He has said that He will bring me home
And day by day I know He will renew me
Until I stand with joy before the throne

To this I hold: my hope is only Jesus
All the glory evermore to Him
When the race is complete, still my lips shall repeat
Yet not I, but through Christ in me
repeat

Yet not I, but through Christ in me (x2)
